Certified Organic Coffees and Teas are produced from crops grown without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Such crops are grown by farmers worldwide, who emphasize the conservation of soil and water, as well as encourage the use of renewable resources to assure healthy soil, and a thriving ecosystem. Certified Fair Trade means that family farmers in developing countries throughout the globe are paid a fair and livable wage for their harvests, as well as premiums specifically earmarked for environmental management programs, and community development projects. Certified Shade Grown Coffee is grown in forests, at the base of high canopy trees such as orange, avocado, and lime. Shade grown coffee farms are small self sustaining ecosystems, second only to the tropical rainforests in terms of biodiversity. These farms are a sanctuary for over 150 migratory bird species, whose population has decreased over 50% over the last 25 years, primarily due to the habitat destruction caused by clear cutting of forests for full-sun plantations.
